The merger of India’s third largest mobile telephony company, Idea Cellular (Idea), with the second largest mobile operator in the country, Vodafone India Limited (Vodafone), announced in March 2017, gave rise to a new company Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL). The deal valued at around $23 billion led to the creation of the world's largest telecom operator and the leading communications provider in India ‘with almost 400 million customers, 35% market share, and a 41% revenue market share’.
Post-merger, all the products and services of VIL were offered under the Vodafone and Idea brands which were complementary in nature. VIL offered Voice and Data services across the 2G, 3G, and 4G platforms, enterprise services, and other value added services (VAS), including short messaging services, digital services, content, IoT, and enterprise solutions.
