A Note on L&T

The origins of L&T can be traced back to 1938, when Danish engineers Søren Kristian Toubro and Henning Holck-Larsen arrived in India to begin importing and marketing Danish dairy equipment. The duo later set up a small workshop to undertake engineering work and services to repair and fabricate ships during World War II. The company got its first major break in 1940, when it secured a huge assignment to build a soda ash plant for the Tata group. In 1945, L&T was appointed as a distributor of US-based Caterpillar Tractor Company for earthmoving machinery. The company gradually set up offices in New Delhi, Calcutta (now Kolkata), and Madras (now Chennai). With a paid-up capital of Rs 2 million and a turnover of Rs 10.9 million in 1950, L&T went public..
