Background Note
Facebook, a social media platform, was created by Zuckerberg along with four other Harvard college students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Zuckerberg built a website called ‘Facemash’ in 2003 while he was an undergrad student at Harvard University. This website allowed students to evaluate the attractiveness of their fellow classmates based on their photos on the website. While the website gained attention within the Harvard community, it was also widely criticized by those who thought ranking another person on appearance was disrespectful. In November 2003, Zuckerberg admitted to the Computer Services Department that he had breached the security of unauthorized access to Harvard student directories including that of the university’s dormitory ID photo databases, and his website Facemash had violated the individual privacy of the students.
