Her father was an accountant general and after the India-Pakistan partition, the family moved to Delhi where she completed her schooling and enrolled in Miranda House, a prestigious college in Delhi, for higher studies. However, she had to discontinue her studies after getting married at the age of 17 to Dharamvir of Ludhiana, Punjab, who was managing his 100-year-old family business of trading in food grains, oil, and fertilizers. Once her children were old enough to join boarding school, she decided to pursue her passion and took up a baking course at Punjab University..
