Background Note
Taiwan, officially called the Republic of China, is an island state in East Asia, about 180km off the coast of mainland China. The total area of Taiwan is around 36,197 square kilometers. The country has a population of 23.59 million (2018) and about 850,000 to 1 million of its citizens live or work in China. Numerous daily flights link the island to multiple major cities in China. Taiwan is a self-governing democratic republic whose head of state is the president. China has been claiming Taiwan as part of its territory since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. It has largely blocked Taiwan from participating in many international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), unless it accepts the “One China” principle..
