Philip Morris: Historical Background
PMI traced its history back to 1847 when its founder, Philip Morris, opened a tobacco shop in London. In 1873, after the founder’s death, his brother Leopold Morris (Leopold) took over the business. In 1881, the company went public, offering stock ownership of £60,000 that was oversubscribed 6 times. With the proceeds Leopold opened manufacturing facilities in Poland and in London (Marlborough Street). PMI’s popularity grew further with cork-tip cigarettes, which were marketed as cigarettes that brought ‘Luxury to lips’. But Leopold did not manage the business well and by 1894, it was floundering, deep in debt..
