Farmers’ Protest
Farmers’ organizations viewed the farm bills as inimical to their interests. Expressing these fears, they stated that the farm bills would eventually dismantle the MSP system. With the demise of the MSP system, the farmers would not get a fair price for their agri produce and they would lose ownership of their lands due to the entry of big corporate companies into the agri trade, they said. Rashpinder Singh, a farmer, said, “The Indian Government has left the farmers at the mercy of big corporations. It is preposterous to believe that farmers who have small holdings will have any bargaining power over private players.”..
In Support of The Farm Bills
Key stakeholders and industry experts of agri trade expressed the view that more than 80 percent of the marginal farmers would accrue benefits from the farm bills 2020 apart from the organized players in the food trade, agritech startups, and agri warehouses. They were of the opinion that the farm bills were visionary and progressive and the government had made the right move toward fulfilling its mission of doubling farmer incomes by the year 2022. The farm bills 2020 would benefit small and marginal farmers who had agriculture lands of less than two acres each and constituted the 80 percent who were not protesting against the new laws..
Road Ahead
Despite several rounds of talks between the protesting farmers and the GoI, as of February 2021, the protests were still going on with the farmers continuing with their blockade of roads leading to the national capital. The farmers seemed to be prepared for the long haul, until the settlement of the issues. With all the measures to evict the protestors by force having failed, it remained to be seen how the government would tackle the situation and bring normalcy back..
