INTRODUCTION |

Tanzania, an East African country with a population of 56 million in 2018, had a very large young population. According to the CIA’s fact book, 43.4% of the population in 2018 was aged between 0 and 14 years. However, many of them did not complete primary or secondary school education. A Human Rights Watch report in 2017 stated that around 5.1 million children aged 7-17 years did not attend school. Another report by CE International in 2016 mentioned that only 42.4% of children (5-6 years) were enrolled in pre-primary schools in Tanzania. Among the children who did attend school, a majority did not have adequate numerical and literacy skills. This was substantiated by a study which revealed that 50% of Tanzanian children aged between 10 and 16 years failed basic numeracy and literacy tests set for 8 year olds.
