The Need to Empower Women Farmers in India
According to the report of the National Sample Survey Organization of India, of all the rural women in the villages, 75 percent of them were farmers and assisted in the production of 60 to 80 percent of food in India. Women farmers in India participated in the farm activities of sowing, seeding, transplantation, and spraying of fertilizers. The post-harvest process also involved the active participation women farmers in grading, cleaning, and processing of the agri-produce. The women farmers either worked on their own farms or worked as paid laborers in other farms. One of the biggest challenges faced by the government was changing the attitudes of the people towards women’s empowerment with the society still leaning towards the patrilineal and patriarchal traditions followed since generations..
