Problems of India’s Farmers
Agriculture was the largest employer in India. In 2010, it accounted for 51.52% of the overall workforce in the country. Although the percentage had fallen to 41.49% by 2020, it was still the largest employer, followed by the services and the industrial sectors. (Refer to Exhibit I for the graphical representation of distribution of India’s workforce across sectors from 2010 to 2020). However, the share of agriculture in India’s overall GDP was close to 20% in 2020. Although India was one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables in the world, farmers of perishable produce failed to earn decent profits due to lack of supply and demand forecasting mechanisms, poor access to timely and reliable market information, the presence of a number of intermediaries between farmers and consumers, and poorly developed supply chains and logistics networks..
