Business Model
Vivek established AIBONO in 2014 with the aim of improving agricultural productivity and farmers’ income by providing real-time precision agricultural services to farmers and synchronizing real-time market demand with precision agricultural practices. The company’s business model was partly on the cloud – where data crunching took place – and partly on the ground – where field agents helped farmers go digital and agriculture experts conducted experiments in laboratories to validate the latest farming techniques. AIBONO offered smart farming services, personnel and devices such as sensors, farm equipment, tech support, farm experts, data, and intelligence and farm managers that were shared among farmer collectives which the company aggregated. The company claimed that its business model was both technology and people centric..
Future Plans
In early 2020, Vivek claimed that AIBONO’s partner farmers had registered 1.5 – 2 times higher yield and 1.3 – 2 times higher income than farmers who practiced conventional farming techniques and methodologies. On an average, AIBONO’s partner farmers earned INR500,000 per acre. As of September 2020, AIBONO was partnering with around 1,000 farmers in the Nilgiris region and supplied perishable vegetables and fruits to around 800 retailers, mostly in Bengaluru. The company planned to tie up with younger farmers who were well-versed in using the internet and electronic devices and were better educated than their elders. The company said the younger internet-savvy farmers would simplify the field workers’ workload as they would be able to capture data themselves using sensors and upload the data onto the cloud..
