Abstract

Jain irrigation Systems Limited (Jain Irrigation) was in the Fortune's list of "Change the World" at 7th position in 2015. The company was also recognized as one of the top 15 Sustainability Champions in a list prepared by the World Economic Forum and Boston Consulting Group in 2011. Jain irrigation, located in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, 400 kilometres (approx.) from the West Coast of in India, started in 1987. The company had developed a business model that not only created profits for the founders but also addressed the social and environmental problems plaguing the local farmers, in a sustainable manner.

The case focuses on the Inclusive Business Model developed at Jain Irrigation. It explores in depth the efficiency of the model and the impact the company had on thousands of farmers in various states of India. Jain Irrigation had to invest a lot of money on procuring land, building rain water harvesting systems, and spreading awareness about the MIS products. The analysis of the case will lead to discussions on the forces driving the company to make huge investments to create the inclusive business model.
