Abstract Case Intro 1 Case Intro 2 Excerpts
Introduction
In May 2024, the parents of a 14-year-old in Minnesota, US, filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation (Roblox), a US-based popular gaming platform, claiming that Roblox had intentionally designed video games to foster addiction among children. The parents accused the gaming company of illegally monitoring the online activities of children and using behavior-based algorithms to prolong their playing time while attempting to sell merchandise to them. The lawsuit stated that the teenager who played on Roblox had not only spent more than 6,000 hours on it, but had also paid a hefty sum to purchase in-game transactions. This had caused significant mental health and behavioral issues in the teenager and he was diagnosed with depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) , and video game addiction, the lawsuit said. As a result, the boy needed outpatient counseling, medication, and specialized education and tutoring, it claimed. There were also other instances of parents holding Roblox accountable in cases of child exploitation, sexual abuse and harassment, sharing of explicit content, a lack of sufficient child safety environment, deceptive advertising, and the causing of severe mental health and behavioral problems among children..
