Introduction

On April 21, 2022, Apple Inc., (Apple) announced that it had partnered with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), the Applied Environmental Research Foundation (AERF), for the protection of mangrove forests in Raigad, Maharashtra, India. AERF would work with Apple and involve the local communities to safeguard the 2,400 hectare mangrove forests along the coastline of Raigad. AERF took various initiatives to protect the environment, including entering into conservation agreements with the local community members and supporting them in environment conservation efforts. It also planned to work along with Conservation International in the areas of carbon benefits assessment and related climate benefits in Raigad due to the conservation of mangroves.

As mangrove forests were a rich habitat for a variety of fishes and honey bees, they offered a lot of opportunity for the local communities in terms of fishing and apiculture through the utilization of sustainable practices.
