Introduction

Walmart Inc. (Walmart) reported that its e-commerce sales in the US had grown 79 percent in FY2021 compared to FY2020, going up to US$43 billion from US$24.1 billion. With this, it became the No 2 online retailer in the US. (Refer to Exhibit I for Online Sales of Walmart by Division). The growth was driven by sales on the Walmart marketplace, and the launch of services like buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) and curbside pickup and delivery.

In May 2021, Walmart reported e-commerce sales were up 37% in the first quarter of FY2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. Industry experts were of the opinion that combining brick-and-mortar with e-commerce had proved to be a winning strategy for Walmart.
