About Patagonia

In 1957, Chouinard, an accredited rock climber, set up a blacksmith shop in the backyard of his house in Burbank, California. He made pitons – metal pegs or spikes that are driven into rocks to support mountain climbers’ ropes. The pitons became very popular among his friends and other climbers. In 1965, Chouinard partnered with fellow climber Tom Frost to start Chouinard Equipment. By 1970, Chouinard Equipment had become the largest supplier of climbing equipment in the US. However, it had also become an environmental villain because its gear was damaging the rocks which had to endure the repeated hammering of pitons during both placement and removal..
