Introduction
On September 14, 2022, Yvon Chouinard (Chouinard) founder of US based outdoor apparel company Patagonia, set a bold new precedent for how companies could address the environmental crisis as he relinquished his ownership of the company. Chouninard announced that he and his family would give up their 100% ownership of the company valued at around US$3 billion dollars and distribute it to two new entities – a uniquely structured trust and a non-profit – to help combat climate change and the environmental crisis and save the planet. Under the new ownership model, 98% of the company’s non-voting stock would be transferred to Holdfast Collective, a non-profit dedicated to protecting nature and other environmental causes..
