Introduction
In October 2023, the US-based multinational automotive and clean energy company, Tesla Inc. (Tesla), was locked in an increasingly bitter dispute with union workers in Nordic countries. The showdown pitted Elon Reeve Musk (Musk), Tesla’s CEO – who was determinedly anti-union in nature – against the strongly held labor standards of Nordic countries.
On October 27, 2023, Industrifacket Metall (IF Metall) , a Swedish trade union, initiated a strike against Tesla’s vehicle service subsidiary in Sweden, TM Sweden (TMS), due to the company’s refusal to sign a collective bargaining agreement. Tesla did not manufacture in Sweden, but its Electric Vehicles (EVs) there were serviced by more than 120 mechanics, who were a part of TMS.
