Introduction

In March 2023, Nike Inc. (Nike), one of the best-recognized American sports footwear and apparel companies, appointed James Loduca (Loduca) as its new chief diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officer. Announcing Loduca’s appointment, Nike stated that DEI were top priorities for the company. Loduca took over at a time when the company was grappling with lawsuits related to gender discrimination, and gender pay disparity.

Nike had been an advocate of having a diverse workforce ever since the company hired Donna DeBerry as its first vice president of Diversity in 2006. The company believed that diversity created a competitive advantage and leveraging on diverse talent could help it build strong relationships with diverse consumers across the world. The company also felt that innovation came from an inclusive work environment where diverse kinds of talent were nurtured and diverse ideas were fostered. Since 2002, Nike had also committed itself to implementing federal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) workers.
