Background Note
Zalando was founded in Berlin in October 2008 by two young entrepreneurs, Schneider and Gentz, who were flat mates while studying at WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management (WHU) in Germany. The duo bonded over a common wish to start a business. After graduating, the pair headed to Mexico where they co-founded their first startup called Unibicate, a social networking platform for universities in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile in 2007. However the platform failed to attract many users and was eventually shut down in early 2008. Schneider and Gentz were so broke that they did not have enough money to buy a plane ticket back to Europe. They then approached Oliver Samwer, CEO of tech incubator Rocket Internet SE and alumni of WHU. Samwer had met Gentz and Schneider earlier at school events. Impressed by the duo’s entrepreneurial spirit, he used to check in periodically on their whereabouts. On hearing of their troubles abroad, Samwer paid for their return flight tickets and also offered them an opportunity to work for him..
