The Need for a Social Initiative

Araku Valley is a forest area located in the Eastern Ghats of India, around 115 km to the north of Visakhapatnam, a city in Andhra Pradesh. Plagued by Naxal insurgency and government apathy, the tribal people of the backward Araku forest area lived in abject poverty. There was a high incidence of maternal mortality and malnutrition was rife among the children. The tribal people were isolated from the mainstream society due to social norms that were in place in the region (Refer to Exhibit I for the Situation of Tribal People in India)..
