Introduction
Little did Alasdair Harris (Harris), a marine ecologist, realize that a research trip to survey the coral reef in Mozambique Channel in early 2000, would transform his thinking and mark the start of a whole new journey in his life. Although the expedition was incredible, Harris, while listening (key feature of the organization which he would go on to build) to the local Vezo community, felt their concern for declining fisheries and the effect it had on the community that depended only on fisheries for their livelihood. The threat to the fragile marine ecosystem from commercial and detrimental fishing techniques, compounded by the population growth, overwhelmed him. He felt the need to go beyond research and traditional conservation and establish a social organization that would work with the local population to conserve marine ecosystems and manage them in more sustainable ways. This thought process gave birth to Blue Ventures (BV) in early 2000, an organization which constantly developed transformative approaches to catalyze and sustain local led marine conservation..
