Farm to Feed – The Beginning
After the first COVID-19 case in March 2020, the Kenyan government took measures and announced a lockdown with the borders closed and a strict curfew imposed. This resulted in major logistical challenges for farmers due to the absence of transport from rural to the urban areas. Also, the markets for the farmers to sell their crop became less accessible or were even closed completely..
Operations
Farm to Feed created opportunities to sell the imperfect (but still edible) and/or surplus fruits and vegetables that would otherwise have gone waste by putting in place feeding programs. Farm to Feed also sold grade one and grade two (perfect) produce, which accounted for about 20 percent of total sales as of September 2020..
Road Ahead
Within a year of its inception it managed to pay farmers over USD200K in additional income from the rescued produce that would otherwise have gone waste. In addition, 655,000 kg of vegetables was prevented from going waste..
