Background
Razorpay was founded in Bengaluru, capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, by Mathur and Shashank Kumar (Kumar) in 2014. Their explorations around a payments processing business began when they realized the difficulties faced by startups in accepting money online. In India at that time, there were only a few payment processing companies and the documentation process for startups was a long one with a long list of documents required. Kumar said, “Five years ago, when Harshil and I moved to Bangalore to start Razorpay, the startup ecosystem was still nascent and less than a decade old. For most businesses, accepting online payments was a major struggle and it was a stumbling block in India’s digitization drive.” ..
