About Housing.com
Housing.com was the brainchild of Rahul Yadav (Yadav), an IIT Bombay drop-out. Born in a middle-class family from Alwar, a rural village in Rajasthan, he enrolled himself at IIT Bombay to major in metallurgy.
It was at IIT Bombay that Yadav caught the entrepreneurship bug. While studying at the institute, he built an online question bank Exambaba.com, a portal for free exam papers. IIT made Exambaba the official IIT-Bombay archive of question papers before eventually shutting it down. Yadav said having worked on the question bank, he had learned his lesson, 'If something doesn't exist, build it yourself, and if it doesn't work, move on.'
After a brief internship in Israel, he developed an application for Google Chrome and in his final year, i.e. in 2011, he dropped out of IIT.
In February 2012, Yadav and his IIT friend, Advitiya Sharma (Sharma), had trouble finding suitable accommodation in Mumbai. When they hunted for a house on an online reality portal, they were drawn toward an advertisement for a three-bedroom flat in Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai. The rent quoted was a meagre Rs. 15,000 per month as against the prevailing rents of Rs. 60,000. It was only later that the duo realized the advertisement was a fake posting intended to attract tenants....
