Introduction
In April 2016, Apple declared its first year-on-year quarterly decline in revenues since 2003. Its major revenue earner, the iPhone, also saw a 13 percent fall in sales. Though the management of Apple blamed it on the slowing global economy and decline in the overall smartphone market, analysts said the sales were below their expectations and felt that unless a radically new version of the iPhone with distinctly different features was introduced, it would be difficult for Apple to continue its strong growth.
On the other hand, Samsung, which seemed to have a Galaxy smartphone for every customer segment, and saw an increase in its shipments. As competition between the top two smartphone companies in the world intensified, an industry expert pointed out, “If one wins, the other loses”. The stakes were therefore high for both smartphone giants....
