Neurodiversity and the Workplace
Neurodiversity refered to the variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions, with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, and others that falls under this umbrella. The focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in the workforce was growing. However neurodivergent individuals often remained overlooked in these efforts. Despite the significant presence of neurodivergent individuals—constituting about 10 to 20 percent of the global population, there remained a stark disparity in employment outcomes for this group. Between 30 to 40 percent of neurodivergent adults were unemployed, highlighting a significant gap in employment opportunities compared to the general population. This gap was prevalent even in countries like the US where approximately 85 percent of individuals on the autism spectrum were unemployed, an overwhelming figure when contrasted with the overall national unemployment rate of 4.2 percent..
