Neurodiversity and the Workplace
Neurodiversity describes the range of differences in the human brain's functions, including sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other cognitive processes. Conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia are examples of this diversity. Though the focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in the workforce was growing, these efforts often overlooked neurodivergent individuals. Despite the significant presence of neurodivergent individuals, who constituted 10 to 20 percent of the global population, there remained a stark disparity in employment outcomes for this group. Between 30 and 40 percent of neurodivergent adults were unemployed, highlighting the significant gap in the employment opportunities available to them compared to the general population. This gap was prevalent even in countries like the US where approximately 85 percent of individuals on the autism spectrum were unemployed, an overwhelming figure when seen against the overall national unemployment rate of 4.2 percent..
