Excerpts
Healthcare in Egypt
Egypt was the second most populous country in the MENA region with about 100 million people. Its healthcare system included both public and private payers and providers. The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and the Curative Care Organization (CCO) were the two biggest players of public healthcare. Through its own hospitals and clinics, HIO offered basic coverage to widows, students, and employees, covering about 60% of the population. CCO had entered into contract agreements with healthcare professionals and providers in the private sector to offer inpatient and outpatient care. It also covered accident cases, private patients, and a limited number of patients below the poverty line through MoHP grants. (Refer to Exhibit I for the overall structure of the Public Healthcare system in Egypt)..
Health-Tech In Egypt
The Egyptian government indicated that private medical providers needed to play an important role in the UHC program. With the country’s population having doubled since 1990, there was an acute need for diagnostic services, medical specialists, and hospital beds. There were opportunities for public-private partnerships in hospital building, diagnostic services, specialist care, information technology, and the administration of insurance claims. However, the regulations still forbade anyone except licensed physicians from owning outpatient clinics and new startups had to seek approval from at least nine government agencies before launching operations..
The Birth of Chefaa
Aref was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2017 and had to undergo chemotherapy after the carcinoma was removed surgically. Her entire way of life changed as a result, including what she ate and how much medication she took. During this phase she had the opportunity to speak with numerous other cancer patients, who shared with her the difficulties they encountered in obtaining the necessary medications, adhering to the altered lifestyle that came with the disease, and controlling their condition. This got her thinking about a single application to support cancer patients and others..
The Chefaa Tech Platform
The Chefaa app for patients and pharmacists was simple and had an easy interface so that even people with little awareness of technology could use it with ease. Though the interface was simple, the app was AI powered and had a powerful algorithm running behind the scenes. Through its web and mobile application, Chefaa connected pharmacies and patients, allowing chronic patients to order, schedule, and refill their regular medications as well as buy other non-pharmaceutical products from pharmacies. Chefaa intended to put patients in contact with nearby pharmacies. To serve patients more comprehensively and for better patient compliance with improved accessibility and affordability, the company’s platform made use of artificial intelligence, GPS-enabled, data-driven apps to help users order, schedule pharmacy needs, and save on costs. This allowed consumers to receive medicines with the least amount of effort and waiting time..
Chefaa’s Growth Journey
Within the first 18 months, Chefaa recorded more than 150,000 orders and more than $2.25 million in sales during the year ending in October 2019. A network of 809 pharmacies had signed up for the services on the Chefaa platform..
A Future Ahead – Opportunities And Challenges
In March 2023, Chefaa partnered with Baheya Hospital in Egypt to provide a range of technologically advanced, patient-focused services to enhance the hospital’s breast cancer treatment program. Rady stated in a press release: “This collaboration with Baheya foundation aligns perfectly with Chefaa vision to empower all patients. And with women being the acting support system for the family, this collaboration fits not only to promote and support women’s health but to keep the anchor of families strong for all patients in a family. Women health is not a trend, it’s a pressing necessity, and should be a priority.”..
