Introduction
The famous Indian epic, Mahabharata, captures the story of the Kuru dynasty, and in particular, of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, who were cousins. The Pandavas, led by Yudhishthira, were the rightful heirs to the throne of Hastinapura . However, their cousins, the Kauravas, led by Duryodhana, thought the throne was rightfully theirs and were unwilling to share power. Combined with realpolitik and intrigue, they planned a series of deceitful actions to keep the Pandavas away from kingship. This resulted in humiliation, shame, and a significant loss of rights to the Pandavas. And it culminated in the Mahabharata war as a means to settle the rights to the kingdom and to avenge the humiliation and shame. Alliances were formed across the country, and warriors of great renown decided on which side their loyalties lay. Among them was King Shalya of Madra , a mighty warrior, an accomplished charioteer, and uncle to the Pandava princes Nakula and Sahadeva.
